Colombia is one of the most diverse and fascinating countries in South America, and is certainly a personal favourite of mine. I love the incredible landscapes and biodiversity, the rhythms of the Caribbean coastline, the vibrant cities and the colourful historic towns. Our clients love to explore heritage towns like Jardin, Salento, Mompox and Villa de Leyva, and we love to recommend the unforgettable sights such as the ethereal Salt Cathedral and the panoramic view from atop El Penol over Guatape. We also love the festival scene in Colombia; these feel-good events are always a highlight for those who visit them, especially the flower festival in Medellin. Of course, no trip would be complete without the fabulous walled city of Cartagena and the beautiful Rosario Islands.

Unspoilt Colombia consistently ranks in our top 5 destinations to visit in Latin America. It's famous for salsa, coffee and gold, but has dramatic Andean scenery, palm-fringed beaches, a great abundance of flora and wildlife, and a variety of atmospheric historic towns, making it a superb destination for families, solo travellers and couples who are looking to have a variety of experiences in one of South America’s most authentic countries. Client feedback is unanimously positive with many citing the carnival in Barranquilla, the wildlife of the Llanos and the powerful story behind the transformation of the city of Medellin – now one of the continent’s most progressive and innovative cities – as highlights. In 2014 the national airline Avianca began operating a direct, non-stop flight from Heathrow to the capital Bogota and that has significantly helped to bolster visitor numbers from the UK. Owing to the country’s popularity, we have just launched two new holidays to increase our Colombia portfolio to five suggested tailor-made trips and two escorted group tours.

When I think about Colombia, I feel it's the perfect mix of nature, culture, and adventure. From experiencing the traditions at a coffee plantation in Armenia, where you can taste some of the best coffee in the world, to the modern Medellin with amazing transformed neighbourhoods that have evolved from dangerous places to icons of the city, where community development and prosperity are visible after just a few years. Trekking for a few days in the middle of the Sierra Nevada offers the most magical landscapes to reach the Lost City (Ciudad Perdida), a place disconnected from the outside world, where ancient cultures still live and practise their traditions, ruled by Mother Nature. Then, discovering the beauty of Cartagena, a city full of colour, flavour and life by the Caribbean Sea, with white sand beaches and city walls that offer unique views. I also believe that Colombia's true treasure is its people, they will always make you feel welcome in the Country of Beauty.

Colombia ranks among the most biodiverse countries in the world. Whether hiking in the Cocora Valley, or exploring Tayrona National Park, Colombia has rich natural landscapes to offer something for everyone. What sets Colombia apart extends far beyond physical beauty: it’s its people. From engaging with indigenous tribes or staying with locals on traditional coffee estancias, the locals are renowned for their kind hospitality. Misconceptions about Colombia’s safety often deter clients, but infrastructure for tourists is continually improving. You can reassure customers of the enhanced safety measures being put in place. Small group tours, like those offered by Intrepid, are a great way to explore the country with the safety net of a local guide who can provide assistance when needed.
